Sanssouci Park, a Must Visit UNESCO Site in Potsdam, Germany

Day 4, Germany
We had lunch  at a Vietnamese Restaurant on our last day in Berlin.

Since this was our first time visiting Germany, we wanted to see a few more places in this country.

Still sticking to my mostly vegetarian diet, I was happy to find restaurants in Berlin offering just what I needed.

I enjoyed my vegetarian dishes while visiting Berlin

We had brunch in a Vietnamese restaurant on route to the train station.

After spending three nights in Berlin, we moved on to another city, boarded a train heading to Potsdam.

Potsdam, Germany, -a pretty little town.

Our train was late and we needed to transfer to another bus which was also late.

We must have waited for about 30 minutes for our connecting bus in the sweltering afternoon heat along with many other passengers

Though we left Berlin by train well before 12p.m, it was almost 4pm by the time we reached Potsdam!

We finally got to Potsdam, our next destination in Germany!

We checked into our hotel right by the train station and set out to explore the city before it got dark.

Our first stop was the Potsdam Town Square where the Potsdam Museum, post office and other important government buildings are situated..

However, these buildings were not what we were interested in visiting.

We had another location in mind.

Sanssouci Park, a significant historic monument made up of palace buildings and garden structures was where we wanted to visit,

Visiting this UNESCO site was the sole propose for us to be at Potsdam.

We headed out to the park before it got too late!

s

The palace is well hidden in the park. After entering the park, we still walked quite a distance.

For physically challenged people, it would  not be an easy walk for them.

We enjoyed the scenery as we were .strolling through Sanssouci Park
,walking on the palace ground.

I immediately recognized this palace as I had learned about it in a travel documentary from watching a TVO program in Toronto.

.

The magnificent palace ground was lined with statues, well manicured shrubs and lawns with flowers in full blooms.

The garden designs were started in the 18th century and were continually developed until  the end of  the monarchy in 1918.

The Sanssouci Palace with its Vineyard Terraces were laid out  together in 1744 as the summer residence for Frederick ll.It forms the famous centerpiece in the garden.

The Palace Buildings and the Terraces form the centerpiece of the Sanssouci Park in Potsdam, Germany

The terraces have been built on a multi level ground.

On each level, the plants were growing against a wall petitioned off by a pair of full length windows.

We climbed up the stairs to the palace and had a good view from the top of the hill overlooking the garden and the fountain.

The Sanssouci Park is a magnificent place!

It has been included in the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1990.

We were glad that we visited this famous place and made the historical facts we have learned came alive for us!

After our visit at the palace we went for a late dinner at one of the side streets

We had Indian food this time. It was good.

We walked by the square we passed by earlier and heard music playing with many people dining outside enjoying the night.

It was a long day for us, but we enjoyed visiting the UNESCO site!
