St. Florian Church - Pope John Paul ll's Church in Krakow

Statue of Pope John Paul ll, Krakow, Poland

We learned a lot about Poland and the city of Krakow during our trip.

Pope John Paul ll - Krakow's most famous citizen

For instance, we learned that the most famous and greatest citizen of Krakow -
Pope John Paul ll!

No wonder we saw numerous pictures and statues of him wherever we went in Krakow.

I am not Catholic by religion, but I have a lot of respect for the Pope, the head of the Roman Catholic Church.

Of all the Popes during my time growing up,
Pope John Paul ll was my favourite. For one thing, he was very different from his predecessors.

He was Polish, not Italian. I remembered well the feverish interest, intense love and enthusiasm generated during his papal visits to Poland in the 1980's.

The city of Krakow was where
Pope John Paul ll spent almost four decades of his adult life.

We went to visit St Florian church, the church where Pope John Paul ll began his service as a young priest.

Beginning as a young priest  he later became a professor at the university, a writer and poet.

Later on he became the bishop and at age thirty eight, he became the youngest archbishop.

We stopped and reflected in this special church.

I felt blessed.

I lit five candles, one for each of our family members plus one for Hanna, my Polish friend and prayed that God would bless her homeland abundantly.
