What Should I Bring for My Pending Trip to East Africa?

I will be leaving with a group of ladies from Ontario, Canada,  to do some volunteer work in a village in East Africa.

Our leader of the team is Valerie who has been planning and organizing this trip for months.
She visited Uganda a number of times and is an experienced traveller in the African continent.
I am grateful that she has been sending us a lot of useful information advising us what to do and what to bring for our African trip.

The following is a list of things sent to us by our group leader:

- A couple of flashlights.  It's often dark to walk around in a couple of the places we stay
- Hand sanitizer - the wipes not gels (it's nice to wipe away the grime. Gel just doesn't do it)
- First aid kit
- A hoodie or warmish jacket. Occasionally it drops down below 20c, and a rain jacket or small umbrella.
--Running shoes are fine and a pair of sandals or flip flops
- Do not wear anything valuable, rings, necklaces, etc.
- An over the shoulder type of purse so it's secure
- An adapter to recharge phones, etc: they use 220 V (in Canada its 110)
A kit  can be purchased in Walmart. However, there can be a bunch of different adapters in the kit that can be useless. Make sure it's good for East Africa, not South Africa or Europe.

The flight is about 14 hrs to Addis Ababa.  You may want to consider: a bag with toothpaste, toothbrush, clean panties, socks, cream etc.. They give us a toothbrush and paste but it's not good quality. I also take a face cloth. Feels nice to have a warm wash and change your undies in the morning.

A neck pillow if you need one for your plane ride as well as a set of headphones if you are going to watch the entertainment system. Their headsets are flimsy. You will need an adapter for that too: the airline seats have double prong, most headsets are single prong.

Thanks, Val, for your great suggestions and reminder. Africa, here we come!
