Riding Out the Rough Water on Lake Victoria, Uganda

One of the excursions we had during our visit to Uganda was a visit to the Chimpanzee Sanctuary  located on Ngamba Island.

Frederick, our driver came and picked us up from our guest house and drove us there.

It took an hour of car ride to reach the dock.

I was surprised to find that this was a quiet place without any hawkers trying to sell us anything. It was a nice and peaceful walk to the dock.

From there, we got into a speed boat awaiting to take us to  Ngamba Island.

A boat ride on Lake Victoria, Uganda.

We were told that the boat ride on Lake Victoria to our destination would take about an hour.

We happily settled in the speed boat. In order to balance the weight, I was seated at the bow of the boat by myself while the rest of my team mates were seated two by two towards the stern.

As the boat sped towards the island, we enjoyed the scenery on Lake Victoria looking for wild life and their habitats.

We learned that Lake Victoria is the second largest lake in the world; the biggest is Lake Superior, Canada, our home country.

We saw many birds and came across numerous fishing boats during our boat ride.

The water and waves were getting rough on Lake Victoria

The boat ride took much longer than we had expected.

While we were riding on Lake Victoria, the water got rougher and  the waves became higher and higher as dark clouds loomed above us.

It was more than an hour as our speedy boat travelling on very choppy water.

We had to hold on to our hats It was a challenging ride as the waves were high and powerful.

Each wave came throwing more and  more water into the boat and rocking us from side to side.

We had to hold on to the sides of the boat to avoid being thrown around.

Sitting at the bow of the boat by myself, I felt I borne the brunt of the winds and waves.

At some point I was thrown so high that my team mates and I thought I could be thrown overboard!

I was not laughing in this picture. We were screaming our lungs out as waves got so bad and rough!

After more than an hour of riding out the choppy water, we finally reached the chimps sanctuary and looked forward to being on dry land for the next few hours!
