Eric, one of our contacts in Uganda, has arranged for us to meet with the tribal king of this area this morning! We were supposed to be picked up by our driver at 7:30 am. But the driver was not told about the change of time, therefore, he came at his usual time. Consequently, by the time we got to King Edward’s residence, it was too late. He had another appointment and left his residence. Too bad!
We visited the St. James Orthopedic Clinic, Jinja, Uganda |
We went to visit the St. James Orthopedic Clinic in Jinja, Uganda. This clinic performs surgeries on children with club foot conditions. It is a charity started by two Canadians from the Kitchener/ Cambridge area in Ontario, Canada. We are immensely proud of what our fellow Canadians have done in this part of the world to help others.
One of the staff member gave us a tour of the clinic and shared with us its mandates.
We learned that if a child is found to have club foot early, i.e. before he/she is two years old, the condition can be corrected easily with some corrective foot braces.
However, if the child is brought to the clinic after two years old, surgery will be required to correct this problem.
This total cost of this surgery including transportation, and accommodation would be around Canadian $800.00.
The clinic also offers post surgery therapy to children such as physiotherapy so that children can recover and learn to walk properly.
Two of our team members saw a student named O. at the school with club foot. He could not stand or walk on his own. He could only walk with clutches.
They were so touched that they volunteered to pay for this little boy's surgery. What a lucky child who met some compassionate and generous Canadians!
O's foot surgery will definitely transform his life for the rest of his days!
