Meeting the Students and Staff at a Rural School in Kaliro, Uganda

On our way to the rural school in Kaliro, Uganda

We have been waiting for today to come! We would meet the students and staff at the school in Uganda, the main reason for our African trip!

We were up at 6am this morning and ready for breakfast. This was our last day at the 2 Friends' Resort, a  beautiful place and I was sad that we were leaving, but excited we would be arriving at the rural school in a couple of hours.

Our ride to the school was smooth at the beginning. We passed through Iganga, and Kaliro, a small town of about 39,900 people.

We passed by many farmlands, sugar cane fields ready for harvest and where farmers were harvesting their sugar canes. Agriculture is the main industry in Uganda.

The road to the school was rough!

By the time we were near Kaliro, the road was rough as it has been washed out by a recent flood. It was full of deep pot holes filled with water. Henry, our new driver was good and he got off the van and checked to make sure that the van could pass safely.

After an hour of rough ride. Finally we arrived at the school!

A very warm and enthusiastic welcome by students at Green Hill Primary School

The entire student body was out welcoming us with songs and their bright smiles.

We were mobbed by the students who kept touching my hands in a friendly and curious way.

It was like a hero's welcome and I was moved to tears.

We met with the school director and the head of school and the staff.

The school director took us on a tour of the school and we visited some classrooms.

A new sewing room for women to learn & develop sewing skills

As we entered each classroom, the students stood up greeting us in unison and songs.

Elaine was moved to tears as she saw the result of her donation - a brand new spacious dormitory for girls at the school!

We also visited the much anticipated new sewing room. It opened only a month ago and has proved very popular in the school community.

Students were energetic and welcome us warmly to the school

We had a catered lunch ( paid out of our own pocket)  at the school.

After lunch, I taught the kids some English songs and played a couple of word games with them while the rest of my team members distributed the menses kits to the girls.

The students were excited and energetic and they were a great bunch to work with.

After jumping around with students, i was exhausted. We did what we had planned for the day at the school.

Our new hotel is located in Kaliro, approximately 150 kilometres northeast of Kampala, Uganda's capital and largest city. By the time we arrived to our hotel, it was almost 7p.m. I was exhausted! We had dinner and I went straight to bed.
