Visiting Ugandan Rural Students in Their Homes

We are visiting Uganda, Africa.
The main reason for our African trip is to visit and volunteer in a rural primary school.

We did some volunteer work today. When school was finished in the afternoon, we drove 2 students home to see ho far they had to walk to school each day.

One of the students has to walk 7 km while the other has to walk 10 km each day to school. They have to wake up at 5 a.m and start walking to school shortly after that each morning.

A village hut in Uganda, Africa

It was a typical African village with a few huts built on it.

When the family gets better financially, they would build a brick house beside it.

We visited the family and chatted with them briefly. I was surprised how the mothers greeted us. As soon as they saw Valerie, they dropped to their knees and shook our hands.

That was a shock to us. Later, I was told that the women always greeted their visitors like this. It was not a sign of subservient, but a sign of respect.

Later on, we went to a funeral, lots of people there listening to the police giving their police report. Lots of people showed up for this funeral and apparently that’s the culture.

It was another full and exhausting day for us!
