Many girls in the developing world face numerous barriers for their education. One of these barriers is their menstruation period.
According to a UNESCO report " one in ten girls in Sub-Saharan Africa misses school during their menstrual cycle....By some estimates, this equals as much as twenty percent of a given school year.
Many girls drop out of school altogether once they begin menstruating."
According to ZanaAfrica, a social enterprise operated out of Kenya, reported that about one million girls do not attend school due to lack of access to sanitary pads.
Each senior female student received a menses kit from our team |
To support girls continuing their schooling, there are charitable organizations that make up menses kits and offer them free to girls so that they would not have to stay home during their monthly period.

The girls' gift bag also contained a candy treat and a Canadian Maple leaf pin which the students worn proudly on their lapels.
The local teacher helped our team to explain the instructions to students on how to use and wash the menses kits.

The girls were so happy that they broke out in songs to thank us for the gifts!
It was a very touching moment for our team to see the gratitude expressed by the girls at this school in Uganda!
