Beautiful Tembleques ( Hairpieces) Worn by Women in Panama

One of the things I enjoy doing during our travel is to learn about the culture, customs and people of the country we are visiting.

We are visiting Panama.  I just love the colourful and unique hairpieces worn by some of the women here.

I was interested in buying a couple of these hairpieces in the local stores.

However, I didn't find any of them displayed or sold in the stores we visited.

Talking to the receptionist at our hotel, I discovered that there is a special name for the hairpiece.

It is called Tembleque in Spanish, which means tremble.

The tembleque is  a part of the Panama national costume.

On special occasions, the women wear the hairpieces to go with their national dresses.

When the women dance, the hairpieces will tremble on their heads therefore they were named Tembleque.

The women usually wear their national dresses in November when they celebrate their independence day.

The tembleques are usually sold in October and are sold out by November 1.

People buy them in advance in preparation for their national celebration.

I will remember to look for the tembleques in October should I visit Panama again around the same time.
