Lectio Divina - Learning to Hear God's Message

Learning together with other participants in the seminary course
Day 2 of Our Retreat

Taking a one week intensive course at the renewal centre, we were really busy for the past few days.

The schedule was packed from morning to night. Our day started at 7:30am every morning with worship in the chapel, followed by communion.

Good fellowship during our meal time at the Queen of Apostles Centre

Then it was a three hour lecture, lunch break, group bible reading and prayers, then more lectures, dinner break, another lecture in the evening.

We sat in a semi circle facing the beautiful view of the garden

In this Spiritual Formation Course, I have learned a group scripture reading method called Lectio Divina - an ancient way of how people read and meditated on the word of God.

We were divided into groups of 4- 5 people and we sat in a circle or semi circle. All members in a group took turn to be a reader and we followed the following steps:

We had a nice room where we could meditate on God's word

Step 1 - Reading of the Scripture Passage slowly by the reader

Step 2-  Group members spend 2 minutes on meditation, looking for the key words or passages that speak to them.

Step 3 - Repeat reading by the reader and group members meditate for the second time
Share the words or phrases with other group members.

Step 4   Repeat reading by the reader and group meditation for the third time.

Step 5   Think about how this word or phrase can apply to the current life situation.

Step 6   Members take turn to pray for each other.

Being here for a week without worrying about grocery shopping, meal preparations, and doing chores, I looked forward to learning how to discern God's word, some great fellowships with other participants and learning a lot from my professor and guest speakers!
