Adjusting Our Schedule to Better Enjoy the Hot Days on Lamma Island, Hong Kong
The main advantage of travelling on our own is not having to follow a tour group schedule and therefore we can have a lot of flexbility. During our vacation on Lamma Island, Hong Kong, we were able to take our time each morning enjoying a delicious breakfast by the seaside at our favourite restaurant before starting any activity. Normally on our holiday, we would be exploring various sites or attractions right after an early breakfast.
However, the summer heat in Hong Kong was too much for us, turning our vacation into a game of cat and mouse with the sun. In order to enjoy our days better on Lamma Island, we needed to adjust our holiday schedule. For instance, in the past few days, we spent the entire morning at a seaside restaurant - taking it easy, relaxing, enjoying both the food and the beautiful ocean view and listening to the waves. Each day, the midday hours became an unavoidalbe retreat which required us to find a refuge from the swelting streets.
We did! After a couple of days, we found the best place on Lamma Island to hide from the midday sun!
After finishing our brunch, we headed towards the Lamma Island library- located in a cosy 2 story building fronting the ocean right by the island's pier. This was the first library we visited where we could be sittiing in front of a picture window with a spectacular view of the ocean while reading the newspaper and magazines provided free of charge to library visitors. At a table on on the second floor of the library overlooking the ocean was where I found my perfect refuge. Turning on my computer, I went through our travel pictures, revisited the many places we travelled, relived the wonderful memories with friends and loved ones and immersed myself in my blogging journey.
What a great way to stay away from the searing afternoon sun by visiting the local libary, enjoying the air conditioning and catching up with my blogging!
Our real exploring -walking the car free peaceful paths of Lamma Island could only begin in the late afternoon, around 4 p.m., when the sun lost its intenisty, could we finally emerge to walk the shaded trails and discover the laid-back charm of this island.
We followed the trails to the beach, passing by . We came to one of the beaches on Lamma Island where residents would organize beach cleanups once a while and where beach parties were held. The beach was not busy at all on the afternoon when we were there. We saw a few people swimming, and a handful of youngsters playing on the sand.
Lamma Island is very multicultural where we saw many European/ white people. We learned that some have lived there for multiple generations and lots of 30 somethings escaping from busy city life are living there too along with the older local fishermen who have been living and fishing on the island for centuries.
The island's population is probably the most multicultural of all the islansd and districts in Hong Kong. As of 2021, Lamma Island's population is about 55% Chinese, with the largest ethnic minorities, which include expatriates- 34%, with 23% being white and 11.4% being Filipino.
On our hike around the island, besides the beaches, we discovered old temples, low rises, some new and old houses - some were run down looking. We also saw some vegetation and tropical plants with huge leaves as long as my hand!
After a few hours of exploring and hiking, we headed back to the main street where there were cafes and restaurants opened. After the sune went down, the air became cooler and the streets of the island became quieter. Those who did work during the day came out, had their evening drinks and socialized with their friends. It was very relaxing, different from the fast pace of HONG Kong island. We liked the village feel and vibe; tt was a peaceful and much needed quiet week for us on Lamma Island!
