A.Y. Jackson Secondary School

Principal of AY Jackson welcome visiting educators to the school

When I found out that we were going to visit A.Y.Jackson Secondary School with the visiting principals, I was a little excited.

This was my old stomping ground!  My last school belonged to the Family of School in this district and I used to attend the monthly principals meetings in and around schools in the area. I might even ran into some former students at the school!

I was always surprised at how accommodating and welcoming the school administrators were whenever we visited schools in the Toronto District School Board.

Principals are busy people shouldering many responsibilities.

Artwork by students in the hallway

Yet, they are often there to welcome us to their schools, explaining about the programs and giving us tours of the classrooms and introducing us to staff members and students.

School library is often used as a Resource Centre or study area by students

With a little more than eight hundred students,  A.Y. Jackson is not a big secondary school at all.
It offers courses to students from grades 10 to 12 .

With declining enrollment due to low birth rate, schools in Canada have been experiencing declining enrollment every year since the past two decades.

A few school boards actively recruit international students in order to fill the spaces in the classrooms. A.Y. Jackson has recruited many International students to the school.

Currently, it has over a hundred of them, mainly of whom from Asia and pay a hefty annual tuition fee to the school board.

The visiting educators from China were impressed by the students with whom they had conversations regarding their educational experience at A.Y. Jackson.
Beautiful artwork decorated many walls at AY Jackson

The school evidently has an emphasis on the science program.

Students were busy at work in the Science Lab

We visited the science lab where students wee busy and engaged in their science lab work.

The Instrumental Music Room

We dropped by the music classrooms where students were provided with classical instruments and had their instrumental music lessons right in the classroom.

Students practicing their musical piece in the music room

We stopped and listen to
students practising their classical piece. Not bad at all!

These will be our musicians of tomorrow!

Visitors awaiting for their tour at the solarium area

A.Y Jackson Secondary School looks modern with solarium walkway and areas.

Many plants lined the hallways; they are thriving and being well looked after by students.

A.Y. Jackson Secondary School is also  equipped with a good size swimming pool where students taking Physical Education have their swimming classes on site.

Students in the Physical Education program swim in the swimming pool located within the school
Our two sons both attended schools in the North York area in the 80's and 90's. Unfortunately, neither of them had swimming pools in their schools. How we wish they could have their swimming classes with their classmates which would have made their swimming experience much more enjoyable!

Our sincere thank you to the principal and staff of A.Y. Jackosn for allowing us the opportunity to visit and learn about the programs offered at the school!
