Awesome Drawings on School Lockers & Everywhere at UTS - University of Toronto School

Nov. 30, 2015

This afternoon, we visited one of the most famous highschools in Toronto, UTS - the University Toronto School.

Inside of the University of Toronto School
UTS is located on Bloor Street in downtown Toronto, right across from the St. George Subway.

Very creative art work on the lockers inside the school!

It is housed in a University of Toronto building.

When I was attending the Faculty of Education at University of  Toronto. years ago, I saw many young kids running around in the same building where I was taking my courses.

Cold grey lockers have been transformed into canvas of UTS students' creative artwork!

I was curious and surprised to learn about the high school associated
with the university.

Years ago, the school charged students a very tiny nominal fee a year, a few dollars only.

Then the fees kept going up. Currently, it charges a whooping $20,000.00 each student per year for tuition! Admission to the school is merit based and students need to write a test as well as going through an interview.

We were welcome into the school by the principal who graciously received us and introduced us to  some of the teachers and students who helped us to learn about the uniqueness of the school.

The school is different from most of the schools we have visited. The most interesting and obvious feature we found was the very creative artwork on the students lockers in the school.

Instead of the dull grey cold lockers we normally see in secondary schools, the lockers at University Toronto School have been decorated with bold colourful and creative drawings by students.

As we toured the school and walked the halls of the school, we marveled at the beauty, the energy and the enthusiasm of the students and staff for arts in the school.

It obviously took a lot of planning, hard work and coordination among members of the school.

I have visited many schools as a school teacher and principal. The amount and quality of artwork and drawings done and displayed at UTS by students were phenomenal!

This was the first time I saw such beautiful artwork on lockers. The visiting educators were in awe upon seeing these artwork!

Besides the students' artwork, there was another surprise feature at UTS!

There is a well equipped workout gym for students in the basement!

Students can go down, work out, lift weights and do other fitness stuff with a staff member's supervision.

There is even a bike room for cycling exercises, How about that?

UTS is a unique school in Toronto with 25% of its students coming from outside Toronto. After         touring the school, I have a better understanding of why so many youngsters want to be there!
