Acrosanti - An Experitmental Urban Community, Arizona

After our visit to the Grand Canyon, we drove south to Flagstaff and spent the night there.
We found our favourite restaurant in the States - Cracker Barrel. Whenever we have been travelling for a little while, we would crave for some homemade style food. This is when we would search for our favourite restaurant which serves up good old fashion home cooked meal.

We stayed at the Econo Lodge at Flagstaff, Arizona
Stan found a good motel close by and we had a good night sleep without breaking our bank. After the disappointing experience from the previous night , we decided not to book and prepay for some popular fancy hotel online only to be redirected to other hotel we did not want.

Instead, we went for the brand name motel such as Econo Lodge at Flagstaff, and the price was half of what we paid for the other fancier hotel. We totally enjoyed our stay and the continental breakfast in the sun-filled solarium breakfast area was a bonus.

We looked for Acrosanti and had a tour of this special urban project and learned more about the architect's work.

We got to Acrosanti  in time for their 11a.m video show, followed by a guided tour of the site.

Acrosanti is an urban experimental project started in the 1970's.

Integrating work, recreation and living space together on a linear street, the original plan was a project intended to create a living place for about 5000 people.

Today, it is a learning space providing courses for people interested to learn and work on their art projects

The Acrosanti Centre also holds special events and concerts for the community each year.

It has a nice cafe providing organic meals to its guests and program participants.

There are many innovative uses of space and  interesting architectural designs throughout the buildings.

For example, these steps in the picture on left where we rested are in fact the ceiling of the rooms below. People staying at Acrosanti often sit on these steps at night and have a great view of the stars above.

The city of Flagstaff has a policy of low lights at night forbidding business establishment putting up huge lighted signs. Therefore, the sky of Flagstaff has much less light pollution; it is darker at night allowing a clearer and better view of the constellation at night.

Apparently, one can make reservations and stay overnight at this facility as well.

Acrosanti even has a cafeteria that serves good healthy wholesome food at lunch. For $8- 9.00 each person, one could have an all you can eat buffet there.

That was exactly what we did and enjoyed the home style buffet a great deal!

The drive back south to Phoenix was lovely!

We were driving during the day therefore we could see and enjoy the scenery much better and we made some stops to take pictures of the special cacti we only see in southern Arizona.
