Flying on a Sunwing flight to Cuba

Our first vacation with Sunwing!

After riding on the TTC subway and on the Airport bus for about an hour and half we got off at Terminal 3 where the Sunwing  check in counters located.  

We had never taken any Sunwing flight before; this was our first time.

The plane took off at 6pm from Toronto and we arrived at Varadero, Cuba  after a two and half hour flight. It took us much longer to travel to the western or eastern part of Canada than it does to Cuba! No wonder there are so many Canadians visiting Cuba!

Just two days before we boarded the Sunwing flight, there was a report on CTV national evening news showing a drunk Sunwing pilot going through the customs at the Toronto airport. 

Subsequently, he was fired by the company. 






I don’t think we were the only ones worrying a bit about our Sunwing flight.  After our plane touched the ground on the Varadero Airport making a safe landing, all the passengers on board broke out in a spontaneous applause!

 We have flown numerous times within North America and internationally but applause like this from passengers rarely happens.  It was evident that the safety concern was on a lot of the minds of the Sunwing passengers on the day we traveled to Cuba.

After going through customs, we were met by a Sunwing representative outside the Varadero Airport. He directed us to catch the tour bus waiting to take us to our hotel.  After about two hours we finally arrived at our hotel!

Having checked in and grabbed a bite to eat at the hotel bar, we went to sleep and had a good rest ready for the next day!

Cuba

Taking the Toronto Subway (TTC) to the Toronto Pearson International Airport.

Week of January 8, 2017 

We are going on holiday, finally!  We have always wanted to visit this particular tropical country for a number of years. For some reason, there was always an excuse or some incidents that prevented us from going there. After a busy start in 2017, we look forward to spending a few days on a tropical island in the coming week.

Our first day was a travel day. Traveling light and with our flight departing in later afternoon,  we took the TTC – Toronto’s public transit system to the Pearson International Airport. It was pretty easy and comfortable! 

With just one token each ($ 3.25), we went from the Victoria Park subway station to the Kipling station, the last station on the Bloor Subway Line, about a forty minute ride.  From the Kipling Station, we transferred to Number 192 bus, a 20 minute ride to the airport ( no extra charge for this ride!).  A total of about 25km, how cheap was that! 

We rarely use the Toronto public transit system for our airport trips.  The fare was very reasonable and the ride was not bad at all!

A Busy Beginning to 2017!

It has been a busy start since of the year we welcome 2017.
The day after our new year holiday, I started another course at the seminary and went to my lectures every day for the whole week.

 This was an intensive one week course with classes starting at 9 am and ending in the late afternoon.

 I enjoyed taking the course and learning together with some forty ministers and lay people from churches of various denominations.

I am always excited about learning and going to school. The lecture part is just finished now but the challenging part is to complete all the readings and assignments within the next four weeks. 









I will be up to the challenge and aim to get all the reading and assignments completed on time!

Good thing I don't mind eating cafeteria food as I will be spending a lot of time reading and doing assignments on campus.

I felt great as I went to Waterloo last Sunday and applied to the congregation there what I have learned about small group ministry.


 I did an exercise with them on the Prayer of Examen and gave them an opportunity to practice the questions right there. I hope they have learned something!

Honest Ed Store, Part of Toronto's History; We Will Miss You!

 

On the last day of 2016, we went downtown to mark the end of an era. December 31, 2016 was the last day of Honest Ed Store. The store was located at the corner of Bathurst Street and Bloor Street  in downtown Toronto.   



 










It was a bargain store that sold house ware items ranged from pots and pans to children’s clothing.  It served the residents of Toronto for over 60 years, especially new arrivals to the country looking to buy things for the families at affordable prices.

Ed Marvish was the store’s founder and was known for his flamboyant personality and creative marketing techniques.   For example, self deprecating sayings such as the following were illuminated  brightly and hung outside his store for decades:

Honest Ed is a freak. “He has bargains coming of his ears.”

Honest Ed attracts squirrel. “ At these prices, they think he is a nut.”

Honest Ed never goes out but his prices keep saying good bye.

Honest Ed’s embarrassed. He’s caught with his prices down.

The Honest Ed building has been a well known and beloved landmark in Toronto for more than half a century. 

Unfortunately,  this building has been sold to a developer  who would tear it down to build new condos. Many people wanted to have a piece of the store as a souvenir.


 On its last day, hundreds, might be thousands of people showed up at the store to buy a price sign or a poster or something. The price sign was priced at $9.00 each right to the last hour of the store closing.

 With many willing to pay that price, there were huge lines ups at the cashier.

We were glad that we got down to the store to mark this historic closing. We also got a piece of its history - a poster ! Honest Ed Store, you will be missed by Toronto!

Gifts Need Not Be Expensive and Huge; Good Things Come in Small Packages

Many people wreck their brains and spend hundreds, even thousand of dollars on buying gifts for their loved ones and significant others for Christmas. I would like to share some of a boomer's favourite Christmas gifts.

As a school administrator and a volunteer for numerous community events for many years, I used to receive a lot of gifts during Christmas time. Unfortunately, I could not use a lot of them and have to go the re gifting route.  As we try to unclutter our house freeing us from all these gift items we have accumulated, we have told our loved ones not to buy us expensive gifts or big box items.

I got a beautiful big blue star as a Christmas gift from our son!

In the past couple of years, I have received fewer and smaller gifts. Yet, they didn't mean less to us.
Some of my favorite gifts received include:


1.The Christmas just passed. I received a beautiful big blue star from our son along with a gift certificate for a night of hotel in the Lewiston Niagara region!

 I opened this beautiful blue star box; I discovered twelve cute small tins filled with various kinds of exotic flavoured teas packaged neatly inside the box.The explanation of each tin's content clearly stated on the back of the blue box.

 I loved it and appreciated the thoughtfulness of this gift. Canada is a cold country and it warms my heart and my body to savour a hot cup of tea each morning for the next little while knowing that it was a gift of love from our son!

The hotel gift certificate has helped us to develop a new tradition of going away for a couple of days after the busy Christmas holidays and spend time with family.

2. Two beautiful porcelain coffee mugs from our son a couple of years ago, one for me and one for my husband. These are no ordinary mugs. One mug has all the important kitchen measurement conversion in both the imperial and metric system printed all over it.














 It is so convenient!  For example, whenever I am baking and turning on the oven, I could never remember what 160 degree C is in Fahrenheit.

 I grab my conversion mug from my cupboard. Voila! The answer is right there for me!








Another mug has the colorful and beautiful flowers from which teas are made with healing properties. When our friends come over to visit and sit down for coffee or tea, they would invariably discover which tea they should be drinking to help with whatever problem they have at the time.

These two coffee mugs are great conversational pieces!

3. We have been receiving a plate of delicious home baked cookies for the past three years at Christmas time.
My family fights over these scrumptious goodies at our house.

We enjoy them and appreciate the work and the love that the lady has put into these cookies. Though watching my weight, I would throw my diet plan out of the window and   resume it after the holiday since I have waited a whole year for these holiday treats.






4. This year, together with the home baked cookies, we also got a little plant in a cork with a fridge magnet attached to the back. It is cute and looks great on our fridge!  A small gift but we appreciate the kind thought behind it.

5.  I created my own gift basket - My mother lives in a senior apartment now. She told me not to give her anything big for Christmas as she has no room to store them. I put together a food basket for her and wrap it nicely with these items: two different kinds of low salt crackers, a jar of pickled beets, a package of pistachios nuts, a pack of 6 bottles of nutritious meal supplement, a package of no sugar candies ( my mom has diabetes and can't have any sweet treats). I used a see through gift wrap bag and tied a huge red bow on it. She loved it! She made a point of telling me how much she enjoyed the pickled beets. I must remember to get her a couple of jars on her birthday!

A Trip to Buffalo, U.S. - a New Christmas Tradition for Our Family

Going to the U.S. is only a short 2 hour drive for Canadians living in Toronto

I love our family traditions! There are two of my favourites: number one is our big extended family Christmas dinner get together which has been going on since 1971 originating in Thunder Bay where my maternal grandmother was living at the time.

For our own family, we started this new tradition about two years ago and currently in its third year -

a two day trip to Niagara Falls and |Buffalo with us leaving on Boxing Day!

Our older son bought us this going away trip two years ago and we loved it so much that we requested it for the third time this year.

We stayed at the Wingate by Wyndham Hotel at Niagara Falls, USA. for our annual mini holiday.

When the children were young we used to go on skiing holidays around Christmas time and we loved driving trips this time of the year.

The whole family was in the car with the Christmas music playing intermingled with the children's laughter in the back seats.

The hotel offers good amenities.

We passed by pristine winter scenery with festive lights hanging on snow covered houses in the countryside.

It has a nice spacious lobby.

We all have such lovely memories of our trips!

We had a decent continental breakfast with hot food in the morning

Now, the children are grown with each leading independent life living on the own.

 It was nice going on a family trip spending some time together again.

We drove to Niagara Falls and crossed the border to USA via the Queenston Lewiston Bridge, stopping at the duty free shop buying a few gifts at a good discounted price. E. bought a couple of things for his friend and I bought my beauty stuff.

Y. and I spent a good part of the afternoon and early evening at the Outlet Shopping Mall, buying toys and other gift items for our grandnieces and nephews for next Christmas.  How about that for early Christmas shopping?

E. had a great time visiting his friend with whom he had dinner. We all enjoyed ourselves!

The next day, we had a few minutes to do some sightseeing around the Lewiston area.









 I always enjoy exploring different architectural designs and buildings.

Lewiston is a nice little town. Though we visited Niagara Falls many times, we never stopped at this town.

We must stop and stay a little longer to check it out the next time we visit this quaint little town that is so close to our border.

A short trip to the States but it is one that we all enjoy. We will try hard to keep this new tradition of ours alive!

Dancing Water - A Tibetan Mystery

At this year's Christmas party in my sister's house, we came across a nice metal bowl sitting on the table by the entrance. My sister came back from an extensive trip to India and Tibet last year and brought with her this metal object as a souvenir.

This copper bowl gracing the hallway to the house is no ordinary object.

The piece is composed of two parts. A copper bowl and a wooden mallet covered in felt.

Eagerly, my sister wanted to demonstrate what this extraordinary metal bowl could do. Carrying this bowl to the kitchen, she filled this it half way with water from the tap. Then she brought it back to the dining room table and demonstrated to us what it could do.












Taking this wooden mallet in her hand, she slowly went around the outer edge of the bowl with this mallet. Gradually as the speed of the movement of the mallet picked up, the water in the bowl started vibrating gently. Then at a certain point, the water started to move faster and faster as if it were dancing!

The young people took turn trying their hands working with the mallet and produced the same result. It was interesting! There was no force or any other special instrument used to cause the water to dance splashing water droplets outside of the bowl.

I did  not understand the science behind this special bowl but it was interesting to see how the water could be moved by a certain frequency created by the mallet rubbing against the metal bowl.

I love learning about new thing and this was an ah ha moment for me!
