Proud of Climbing up to the Top of Marble Mountain, Near Da Nang, Vietnam
We went to visit a few places while visiting Vietnam. One of the places we went to was the Marble Mountains located just about 8 km southeast of the city of Da Nang. Their Vietnamese name, Ngu Hanh Son, means "Five Elements Mountains," with each peak named after a different element: metal, water, wood, fire, and earth.
There are many tours taking tourists to visit this site. However, if we had gone with a company tour, we would have to get up very early to join the tour group. Instead of going with a tour, we decided going on our own. After calling a Grab Taxi (similar to the Uber ride in North America), we were picked up from our hotel and dropped off almost to the front of the mountain entrance. The entry fee was cheap (around $3 USD).
Our visit to the Marble Mountain was pleasant as it was the cool dry season and we were there in late afternoon, the crowds were not bad at all. We did a lot of walking and climbing on stone steps, and we were glad we had some comfortable, sturdy shoes with good grips.
Desiring some exercise, we didn't take the elevator but climbed up the stone stairs instead. Though the stairs were narrow and there were quite a few of them, slowly and carefully, we climbed the steep stairs negoiating our way up. Finally we reached the top which offered a breathtaking panoramic view of the city below.
It was not easy climbing up and coming down was just as challenging which could be an issue to visitors with mobility issues. At our ripe old age, we were proud of ourselves having climbed up and got down safely. We were grateful to God for giving us mobility and for His protection and keeping our feet steady. One slip or fall on these stone steps, we could have been injured seriously.
Marble Mountain is also home to the Non Nuoc Stone Carving Village, where one could watch artisans at work.
We did see a few shops at the base selling stone craving souvenirs but unfortunately, we didn't have too much time exploring the stone craving village.
We enjoyed the visit to the Marble Mountain as we were able to do some climbing and saw this culural site. A word of caution - the trails and stairs could become very slippery and dangerous on rainy days. We were glad we went on a nice sunny dry day!
