High Tea at King Edward's Hotel, Toronto

Lobby of the the historic King Edward's Hotel, Downtown Toronto
Thu and Richie got married in Bali recently. Many of us were not fortunate enough to be in Bali to attend the wedding, consequently, we  missed the party for the bride.

A long table was set for our party of twenty

Wendy, Thu's sister in law organized an afternoon tea in Thu's honour at King Eddy's
( The King Edward's Hotel) in downtown Toronto.

King Eddy's is a beautiful well known historic building. Many famous people, royalties such as Queen Elizabeth ll  and celebrities stayed at this hotel while visiting Toronto. It was  at one of these Victorian rooms where Richard Burton proposed to Elizabeth Taylor. So the King Edward Hotel is full of history.

Containers of a variety of teas for guests to smell and choose
Since we had almost twenty people there was a long table set up for us at the main lobby of the hotel.

On the elegantly set long table were wooden containers with tiny bottles of different kinds of tea leaves which tea party guests could twist open the tops and smelt the aroma of the tea before ordering their tea.

Delicious petite sandwiches served at King Eddy's high tea.

Shortly after our tea was served in an individual tea pot according to what we had ordered, we were served with our very own plate of some dainty sandwiches on slices of miniature bread and rolls.

I ordered gluten free sandwiches and the restaurant accommodated my order gladly.  I was served some delicious food that met my special dietary needs!

The bride and her mother honored at the King Eddy's High Tea

Tea, anyone?
After our own personal plate of sandwiches,  we were served with various kinds of desserts set elegantly on three tiered serving trays.

The desserts were delicious and the presentation was excellent along with attentive service from the waiting staff. We had a great time sipping our tea, some with white gloves on while others with their little pinkies tilted up the British way!

Some of the girls at the High Tea
Apparently, it is a tradition in Australia to dress up for the High
Tea. Since Wendy and her family just spent two months there and Thu is from there, Wendy suggested that we dressed up for this event. Some of us did!

A fun and great afternoon for the ladies and some out of town guests for Thu's wedding celebration!

Richard's Wedding Reception at Dynasty's Restaurant , Yorkville, Toronto

Guests were asked to find their names, take a Polaroid Picture and hang it at the restaurant reception area

Richard, my nephew went to Australia to study medicine. He just finished school and got married with a wonderful girl befriended at Australia. They have been together for a few years. two Christmas ago, Richard purposed to his girlfriend and they finally tied the knots in Bali and had a beautiful wedding there.

Richard's cousins & friends celebrated with him in Toronto

However, Richard has good friends and many cousins who were unable to travel to Bali to attend their wedding.

Some of  Richie's relatives

Therefore the new couple visited Toronto and had another reception in Canada so that Richard's many relatives could share their joy and happiness.

The reception was held last night at the Yorkville's  Dynasty Restaurant.

A brief and intimate wedding ceremony

Before the traditional nine course Chinese  wedding banquet started, a  local pastor who was Richard'  friend at university officiated the simple but intimate ceremony.

Signing the papers at the ceremony

After the wedding papers were signed, Richard's grandma and older relatives tol part in the Tea Ceremony welcoming the bride formally  into the family by presenting the new couple with gifts and sharing some words of wisdom.
Richard and Thu receiving gifts from Grandma at the Tea Ceremony

When It was our turn to receive the tea and present the gifts to Richard,  I got so emotional that I was all choked up and could not hold my tears back.

I still remember the days when we visited them at their Pickering house. I saw Richard when he was a baby, then a cute little boy playing and jumping around in our house with our sons together.

How time has flew by and that good little boy, Richie, is all grown up!

Dave, my brother saw me with tears coming out of the ceremony, and he joked around
" Gees, was it really that painful?"

The new couple with their parents and grandmas

Margaret, my sister whose son is getting married next month added " You cried at Richie's wedding. You'd better cry at my son's wedding too. Otherwise, you are discriminating against him!"

A fun wedding game !
There were great good,  games, laughter, videos of Rich's wedding in Bali, the wedding was a great celebration of a happy couple finding each other, being in love and celebrating their new life together.

The most touching momentt for me was when Richard's mom thanking the guests and recalling what Richie was like growing up. Pride was written all over her face!

Richie, in his speech thanked his parents for their support and expressed his gratitude. It was heart warming and touching!

It was a joyful event and great celebration! We were delighted we could be a part of it!

All the best wishes to R and T. as they start their new life together as a married couple!

May God bless you!

E- Race - A Platform to Speak Out and Speak Up

Canada is a multicultural country and Canadians are fortunate to live peacefully and harmoniously with each other. Yet,  we still have tremendous work ahead of us and much to do before we can eliminate discrimination from our society.

Though every Canadian is supposed to be equal and  enjoys the same treatment and rights under our constitution, visible minority groups do face discrimination and encounter numerous barriers  in employment and promotional opportunities.

Canada has a history of discrimination against non Europeans coming to its soil. To prevent some from coming to the land, in 1906, immigrants landing in Canada were required to pay a head tax but it varied greatly among the different races, e.g.

Each South Asian  immigrant paid      $200.00
Each Chinese immigrant paid              $500.00
Each Caucasian immigrant paid           $  25.00

$200.00 was equal to a man's one year wage at the time!

We knew there was blatant discrimination then but unfortunately, there is still discrimination today but it is manifested differently.

Ranjit - founding President of E-Race
For example, in Ontario's Peel region, while racialized people make up  55% of the population, 56% of the residents is of South Asian decent. A disturbing 32% of this group experienced discrimination and there seemed to be an increased number of racism incidents.

In a democratic society, its citizens need to be represented and have their voices heard at the government and political level. However, there is a huge gap with visible minority groups of how they are represented in Canada.

Guest speakers at the E race Launch

For instance,  Avi Rakhra, one of the speakers, informed us  though South Asian Canadians make up 35% of the population in Brampton and 21% in the city of Mississauga, their representation in the provincial legislature is only 7 % and that only 3 % of  South Asians were on the Sunshine list ( A list that list all the employees working for government and their agencies with an annual salary over $100,000.00.)

E-Race is borne out of the dedication and passion of a group of South East Asians determined to address these inequitable issues, to advocate for equity and change, to provide professional training, resources and support to victims of discrimination.

Today was a special day for many South Asians in Peel region as E- Race was launched this evening. Ranjit Khatkur,  the Founding President ( a retired public school vice principal) and the Executive Team delivered eloquent  speeches and shared with the attendees their touching stories, experiences and vision of the organization.

Friends and Some of the E Race Executives
E-Race will provide a platform for people especially South Asians to speak out and speak up about racial incidents,  unfair treatment and discriminatory employment practices.

It is R-Race's goal to advocate for inclusion and diversity in the community and impacting institutional change.

Canada consistently has been ranked as one of the best countries to live in the world. It is because of organizations such as CCNC, Urban Alliances, ACENET and now E-Race that continue to challenge the traditional discriminatory practices of government and institutions. Hopefully, through the work of these organizations, change has and will continue to take place in government/ institutional policy, hiring, attitude and behavior , consequently, our Canadian ideal as a Just Society can be realized.

My heartfelt congratulations to  E-Race and its Executives on the birth of the organization.
My sincere hope that all Canadians will work together and work towards the goals of a truly Just Society and equity for all!

Danielle's Bridal Shower

The Party Room at Danielle & Mike's Condo

We went to Danielle's bridal shower held last Sunday at her condo's party room in downtown Toronto.

Friends & relatives share the joy with the bride to be
A shower in North America can be a bridal shower or a baby shower for the bride to be or mother to be.

It is a joyful and fun event celebrated with friends and relatives.

Amy - Danielle's sister was in charge of the  bridle shower games

The shower events are usually organized either by close friends or family members to honour the bride or mother to be.

What is a party without food? A few of us brought food to share and celebrate with each other.

An edible flower arrangement decorating the food table at the shower
All the dishes were delicious! But the most special was the edible pot of flowers made by Wendy, one of the cousins who is really talented in cake decorating.

This was a beautiful pot of flowers made of delicious cupcakes decorated as various kinds of flowers. It looked really real  sitting on the one end of the food table. I did not even know that the flowers were not real  until everybody started taking one and  eating it!

This shower was a lady's event with a few interesting games.  As each guest arrived, each one was given four clothes pins and guests were told that the forbidden word was wedding at this party.

Every time someone said the word, she would give away a clothes pin to whoever was around and heard it.

Game Time!

Joanne was the smart one who tricked people in saying the forbidden word" Wedding".

Another game that picked people's brains was the word scramble on words related to a wedding.

I am never good at unscrambling words but it was fun trying to figure out those mumble jumble senseless words.

Another fun game was when we searched our own purse trying to score the most points by finding the items as listed on the " What's in Your Purse?"

It was great to meet Danielle's friends at the party. Even her boss and the boss's mother also attended the shower! How nice was that!

Monica was the winner of this game as she had the most items matching the list. Lucky girl!

The most fun part of the Bridal Shower for the bride was opening the presents brought to her by the guests!

Danielle getting her Lucky Red Envelop at her Bridal Shower

A handmade apron for Danielle

Opening the gifts was fun for Danielle, but it was also fun for us too.

I love watching people opening their gifts and being happy as I also share in their happiness.

One of the guests' interesting footwear!

It was a fun afternoon for the ladies to get together and share in the happiness of Danielle's pending wedding.

We also had some fun admiring other people's lovely shoes!

Winter Scenery at Niagara Falls

Cabin Fever - We needed to get away for a day from the city!

We have been experiencing an usual cold winter this year! In the city of Toronto alone, the city has issued  extreme cold alert for thirty one days this winter. In the past winter, we did have extreme cold alert might be just a couple of times for the entire winter, but this year, we have had numerous such alerts.

There is cabin fever building up in many of us -Canadians have been cooped up for too long indoors and we need to get out of the cold and go somewhere warm or somewhere different rather than staying in our hometown for the entire winter.

We just came back from Arizona - a very warm place for Canadians to get away for a little while. For many of the Canadians who cannot get away for long due to work commitments, we can always have a mini - holiday.

My husband is one of these Canadians, therefore he opted to have a weekend away from Toronto. Where did we go? Niagara Falls, Ontario and New York. He even took a Friday afternoon off from work so that we could have an early start for our weekend.

The Duty Free Shop at the Lewiston Bridge crossing on the Canadian side
With the wind on our back, a blue sky overhead and a milder temperature ( -7 degree C compared to the -22 degree the previous night), we headed to Niagara Falls on the New York side. Canada and U.S. have the longest undefended border in the world and we are quite friendly towards each other. There was no much difficultly crossing the border.

We stopped at the Lewiston Bridge, shopped at the Duty Free Shop which offered pretty good price to travelers before heading over to the States.

A mural at the Fashion Outlet Mall in Niagara Falls, New York
With a  wedding shower and two wedding invitations, I have a few gifts to buy.  Armed with our GPS, we headed over to the Fashion Outlet Mall on Military Trail, exiting at Exit 22 after crossing the border and found the place easily.

Shopping at the Dress Barn, one of my favourite stores in the U.S. brought back some fond memories of my younger and working days when I needed to dress professionally and beautifully for work daily.
I could always find something that looked good on me at the store and this time it was no exception.

My husband was very patient as he parked himself at the Star Buck surfing the net while I was lost in the stores. It seemed like yesterday when I was shopping with two young kids in tow at the mall. But this time I was by myself; how time flies!

We concluded our shopping day in the States by relaxing and dining at a Mexican restaurant decorated with colourful furniture and decorations. We tried some new food and looked forward spending the night at Niagara Falls, on the Canadian side.

Niagara Falls, Ontario, Canada
The Niagara Falls are on both sides of the U.S, and the Canadian borders. However, on the Canadian side, its is so much busier and touristy with lots of attractions, shops and tourists. Unfortunately,   it was bitterly cold this weekend.  Our hotel was  right where the actions were but we had no desire to explore the shops because it was late and pretty cold. Instead, we jumped into bed, enjoyed the comfortable spacious room and had a good night of sleep!
Part of the Niagara Falls was frozen during winter this year due to the cold temperature

The next morning, after taking a dip at the whirl pool, we took a leisurely walk to the Keg located on the 9th floor of  the Embassy Suite Hotel and had lunch there. It was a different venue from the regular place at where we dined.

Winter scenery at Niagara Falls
It was not very busy  and we were seated by the window therefore getting an excellent view of the falls, partially frozen by the freezing temperatures this winter.

Well, we are now into March and next week, we will have the clock put forward an hour for the daylight saving time; we look forward to warmer weather ahead!
